CyanogenMod 14.1 [BETA-2] - Custom ROM Samsung Galaxy V SM-G313HZ

Hey hey hey, CyanogenMod 14.1 (CM14.1) ROM is arrived on Samsung Galaxy V SM-G313HZ! As we know, the latest stable Android version now is Android 7.1 Nougat, and this ROM use it.

Again, CyanogenMod 14.1 or CM14.1 Custom ROM for Samsung Galaxy V SM-G313HZ is still developed by the same developer who brought us the previous CyanogenMod ROM series for Samsung Galaxy V (check more on ROM info below). Big applause and unlimited credits to them.

Anyway, As my experience when using it CyanogenMod 14.1 ROM is something that will not give us high performance or fast as lightning or super smooth on our Samsung Galaxy V SM-G313HZ single core phone, with 512 MB RAM. If you want to increase the performance, you have to use your brain like disable the animation, don't install the Gapps, etc.

But this ROM provide our little Android phone the latest Android 7.1 Nougat, so we lucky to get experience the Android 7.1 Nougat Operating System on this single core Android phone. Believe me, there are many Android smartphone with better specs out there that not so lucky like Samsung Galaxy V yet.

Steps how to install CyanogenMod 14.1 ROM for Samsung Galaxy V SM-G313HZ

1. Power off your Android smartphone, and go to recovery mode.
2. Do a full wipe. Go to "Wipe" -> "Advance wipe". Wipe (tick) the "System", "Dalvik / art", "Cache", "Data", and "Internal storage", swipe to confirm wipe.
3. Installing the ROM. Go to "Install", find where you save the 14.1 ROM zip file, install the zip file of CM14.1 / CyanogenMod 14.1 ROM and wait untill done.
4. After the ROM is finish installed, optionally install Google Apps. Pico GAPPS is recommended as it is very simple so it is suitable for our little specs Samsung Galaxy V device. You can find it at http://opengapps.org.
   
   Or IF AND ONLY IF you confuse, you can download it from the link i gave at the download link section above. After all already installed, do "wipe dalvik cache".
5. Finally, reboot your Android smartphone. Caution! This first boot process time can take longer than amazon river. It will need 30 minutes or more for the first boot, so be patient.

Knowing bugs:

• CM file manager cannot access external SDcard. Solution: You can access it from "Download" app, or install another file manager.
• Find anothers by yourself :D

Getux for CM11 ROM Custom Kernel Samsung Galaxy V SM-G313HZ

Allright, now I will share about custom kernel for Samsung Galaxy V SM-G313HZ called Getux Kernel. For your info, "Getux" is a name of Indonesian food :D . This custom kernel is created for Samsung Galaxy V running CyanogenMod 11 ROM (CM11). So do not try this on other ROM, except you are a true hacker :v . This kernel is created by cleverior.ipul@XDA.

Actually I do not have intend to install a custom kernel before. But recently I need to switch my Samsung Galaxy V SM-G313HZ ROM into the one running Android KitKat because I want to play Final Fantasy IV (FFIV) Android game (Some Square Enix games cannot run on Android Lollipop and up, and one of them is FFIV). Well the stock ROM is sucks :v , so I prefer to go back with CyanogenMod 11 ROM.

But the developer is removed the third final release of CM11 ROM because some bugs. Then I go with the second final release of course, and guess what? It cannot boot up. Luckily I got some qlues by guys there that we can fix it by installing another custom kernel. I had a traumatic with OC kernel as it overclocked to 1.4 GHz (my Samsung Galaxy V SM-G313HZ Android phone cannot handle so high CPU clock speed as make it cannot boot up). Then I choose the Getux Kernel and voila! Finally it can boot :D .

• CyanogenMod 11 (CM11 ROM) installed.
• Custom recovery installed. TWRP preferred.

How to install Getux Kernel on Samsung Galaxy V SM-G313HZ running CyanogenMod 11 ROM (CM11)

1. It is recommended to install it on fresh CM11 ROM installment (install it just after the rom is done installed).
2. Just go to recovery mode and install the zip file of Getux Kernel you just downloaded.
3. After the Getux Kernel is finish installed, wipe dalvik cache.
4. Reboot your Android phone!

There is one update I must underlining it on Getux Kernel v. k1.1, it is that the CPU speed frequency has been overclocked into 1.3 GHz by default. This will bring more performance on this Android phone of course, especially when playing games. But if your Samsung Galaxy V Android phone cannot handle it, it will cause you random reboot.

To set to normal CPU clock speed, we can set it through system settings:

1. Open the Developer Options. Go to "Settings" -> "About Phone", tap about 7-10 times rapidly on "Build number" section. There should be a toast message "You have enable developer option".
2. Go back to "Settings" main menu, it should appear "Performance" option now, select it.
3. Select "Processor" -> "Maximum CPU frequency", and set it to "1.2 GHz".
4. Do not forget to check the "Set on boot" option.

To activate init.d, type "getuxmagic" (without quotes) in Terminal Emulator app.

PHH Superuser - Alternative Open Source Rooting Method for Android

"PHH Superuser is the new player on the Android superuser / supersu app management. I am pretty confident this is a trusted supersu management because the project is open sourced. Root is mode on Android device where the system is unlocked and opened for modification. It can unlock the full potentiall of an Android device. On modern Android device like today, we must have some method to controll the powerfull potentiall of root so application that demand for root access is not harm the device system.

By using a superuser application, all apps that demand for root access must have been granted the permission first from the superuser app. And that method is by using superuser managements application to controll the root, and one of the newest is PHH Superuser. "PHH" is taken from its founder name, Pierre-Hugues Husson.

I think PHH Superuser is rooting Android device using "systemless" method. I can figure it because every I boot my Android device from TWRP recovery, it always says "device not rooted". In fact, the root is exist and all of my root application is working well.

If you love the Clockworkmod app and have tried the Clockworkmod Superuser rooting method did not work on your Android device, then you must try this method. Because the same thing is happened to my Samsung Galaxy V SM-G313HZ stock ROM.

The transfer of Chainfire Supersu ownership to Coding Code make me seek alternative of superuser app

At older post I have share how to root Android using Chainfire SuperSu. That method is the most favorite of Android users, and because it have good root command compatibility make it never fail on giving permission and access to all root application on every Android device.

But since the recent news, Chainfire decide to transfer the ownership of SuperSu to relatively unknown and "shady" corporation who called themself Coding Code Mobile Technology (CCMT). Then I start to questioning the security and integrity of SuperSu, especially to the new owner CCMT.

News spreading, the rumors of folks at Android community is also flying. Who is CCMT? Is they trusted? But all the rumors questioning their integrity just gotten bigger and bigger as why they even do not came out and "show their face" to the Android community to make some clarification and declare their integrity holding such a powerfull root management application called SuperSu.

But CCMT is still just a shady corporation to me now. And I am very care to my security and privacy. That is why also the folks at XDA is start seeking alternative superuser and rooting method, especially the one who declare that he is an open source superuser app. Now, PHH Superuser is my number 1 choice on root management app on my Android phone.

How to root Android device using PHH Superuser

Requirements:

• Custom recovery installed.
• Backup

1. First thing first, if you are trying to replace your old superuser app with this PHH Superuser, you must unroot your device first (the option is usually exist in the superuser app option), so there is no code conflict each other. Or if you are rooting your Android device using systemless root by Chainfire SuperSu before, you must restore your Android device boot img to the original just like before installing it.
   
   If this is the first time you rooting your Android device, then you can just simply ignore this first step.
2. Installing zip flashable. Now we will root the device by flashing the Superuser zip file. Just straight boot your Android device into recovery mode, and install the Superuser zip file. After it is done, reboot device.
3. Now the Android device is rooted, we need to install the PHH Superuser.apk application. You also can find it on Play Store.
4. Done. Now the PHH Superuser is ready to act as root management app.

Best Xposed Theming App Module for Android I Ever Used [Xposed]

One amazing thing we can do on our Android device if we have Xposed installed, is we can modify and change the system theme (colors, transition effect, etc). The best is because it take advantage of use of Xposed framework and it means the look of our Android device system is changed without touching the apk of system.    For the third entry, there is Android Theme Engine. Also there is 2 different name of this Xposed module but it looks it have actually same purpose and I can catch it because its created by same developer. Android theme Engine is created for more universal Android version from JellyBean, Kitkat to Lollipop, while Ex-Themer is created for Android Kitkat.
   
   
   
   
   What differencing Android Theme Engine and Ex-Themer from Xposed theming app i said above is they have a custom template selection option, which it can make total modification to the system theme and colors by applying from a template inside it (of course partially modification is still exist for you to use). 4. GravityBox by "C3C076"

   
   Now this is one of my favorites Xposed module, GravityBox. Actually the "theming" modification feature is almost no exist in this app. GravityBox only created to make some minor modification to the Android system framework like changing the status bar elements, navigation bar elements, power menu, key function tweak, etc. Still I like this Xposed module because it never fail on every ROM i have used and it support from Android Jelly Bean to the Android Marshmallow.

5. MonsterUI by "KuaQ"

   
   For the last one, there is a simple and great Xposed theming app for Android called "MonsterUI". The idea of MonsterUI is to theme Android framework style and colors to be a Lollipop Material style. This Xposed module is can work on every ROM's, but all the features and compatibility is working best on AOSP based ROM I think.

7 Best Android Launchers I Ever Used on My Smartphone

Launcher is one of top feature created on Android platform. Basically, launcher itself is an application on your Android phone / device. A launcher on Android is like a bridge that connect user and Android system with its installed application. In fact, launcher is the first application we will interact when we was booted our Android device as we enter the main part of launcher called homescreen.

Moreover on my opinion, themer is have richer screen editor than Launcher Lab by make use of a widget called "Zooper". But everythings is have its cost, I think it need more learning curve to use it because it is more complex.
   
   
   
   
   Users can also download and share homescreen creation each other, and also there is a wallpaper downloader menu. But one thing too bad, Themer Launcher is not fully compatible (not all features will work as expected) with Android device running custom ROM like CyanogenMod, Paranoid, etc or if you change your device default screen DPI.

Note that from number 1 to 3, I do not write post for them. It is because they are the best standar Android launcher, on my opinion. It means the launcher is work like stock launcher for me (I am refer it to AOSP launcher for generality): a homescreen and an app drawer, EXCEPT they are bring more features and functionality from stock launcher such as icon pack / theme changer, more transition effects, line and column settings, gestures, etc... So the best way to know which one is the best is to try it yourself.

But from number 4 to 7 I decide to rewrote my experience on the posts when was using them because the Android launchers is bring something different to use of Android launchers experience for me :D .

Themer Launcher still can be installed and running normally, but you may not able to download themes from Themer themes browser or you will encounter some minor Themer inbuilt features problem if your Android device is on one of those conditions.

Download the zip theme file, then copy it to directory /SdCard/MyColorScreen/Themer/Exported/zip/. To apply the themes go to Themer "Themes" menu -> "Categories" -> "Extracted" and apply it.

The only issue applying a theme from another source is that maybe the theme we downloaded was built from different Android phone / device with different screen resolution. So maybe it won't look 100% perfect, unless we modify it to adapt our device screen.

   To install a custom ROM, we need a custom recovery. And root is the only way if we want to install a custom recovery directly and using it by our Android device.

6. Backup and Restore

   
   Now this also one more things that pretty important, to easily backup and restore of our Android device content. Actually Google also has offer you a service to backup your device to the Google Drive cloud. But it needs a lot of time and bandwith of course.
   
   If we have a rooted Android device, we can easily backup it's whole content from the applications, system, the apk's and anythings directly to our external storage, so no computer needed. There are many apps on the market that offer to do that, example the best is Titanium Backup and Helium.
   
   Or even we can make a full backup of our Android device content and system using the Backup feature on custom recovery like TWRP, CWM, etc as easy as "one tap".

   Last but not least, is a bad reasons that is we can get premium / paid Android app or game for free. Or just hack an in-app-purchase of an application or game to get some premium features for free. Like I said earlier, rooting your Android device is something you must think twice before to do it. As we get many benefits, a rooted Android device is also could bring us some trouble including bricking it or some serious trouble about your privacy and security.

What is Bootloop, Soft Brick, and Hard Brick on Your Android Device and How to Solve It

"Hey do your phone never got bootloop? Then you are not blessed one yet" :D . That's the word i hear often in the facebook group (in Indonesia) where the Android entusiast gathered. It means, bootloop is not something like you are going to die, but it's something you must face everyday if you declare yourself as an Android modder or entusiast. Bootloop on my Android phone is just like breathing in my life :D .

Actually, bootloop is just the most easy situation to handle on your Android device if you make a fail modification or hack on it. There are his big brother which worse called "soft brick" and "hard brick". And this is the difference between them:

Bootloop on Android

The name said it all, a looping on booting process. Bootloop is happen if you make a fail modification or hack to your Android device, and after you restart your Android device it is just give you a boot animation on the screen forever.

You know boot animation right? Boot animation is like the gif image you see when you waiting for your Android device to live and enter homescreen. Example boot animation on Samsung Android device is the Samsung logo with white dot splash animation. Boot animation on CyanogenMod ROM is Cyanogen alien face with animation of white circle around it.

The boot animation process is usually take 1 to 5 minutes. But in bootloop state, it will take forever. Even if you waiting 1 hour, 3 hour, your device won't start.

Usually if you make a modification by flashing a zip file through recovery and the result is gave you a bootloop, it can be fixed by also flashing the uninstaller zip file provided by the mod author's to remove the modification from the device system. Example from the Xposed installation on Android Lollipop and up, it require us to install a zip file through the recovery and if the result is gave us a bootloop, to fix it just simply flash the uninstaller zip file which the developer provided

To fix bootloop is just simply restore from your Android device nandroid backup or flashing some uninstaller zip file where the mod authors provided.

Soft Brick on Android

Softbrick on Android is a state where the device even not enter boot animation. The device just pass untill boot logo and then it will like that forever.

Different with boot animation, bootlogo is the static image of the Android device manufacturer logo and usually followed by text at the bottom "Powered by Android". Bootlogo is the first state ever your device will shown on the screen in the booting process. It give you sign that the device is still fixable by yourself if you make a fail modification. The ordered process of device booting is: Boot logo -> Boot animation -> Device live and enter homescreen.

To fix soft brick on your Android device is just simply restore from your nandroid backup. If that's not helped, you need to reinstall the firmware of your Android device with the stock firmware.

Hard Brick on Android

Hard Brick is the worst situation ever happen to your Android device if you make a fail modification / hack where the device is totally dead. It even not showing you the boot logo, the screen is just totally black.

Well, if your Android device got a hard brick don't desperate first. Try to restore from the nandroid backup, and if that not helped try to reinstall the firmware, and if that's not helped too maybe you should take your Android device to the service center or the repairman :D

Best practice when make a modification on an Android device to prepare the possibilities of bootloop, soft brick, or hard brick

If you are going to make modification on your Android device moreover it is a big modification like installing a custom ROM, it is very recommended to make a nandroid backup first.

Nandroid backup is like a snapshot of your Android device which containing whole device content, system, and even installed applications. The nandroid backup is made using custom recovery like CWM, TWRP, etc. So, if something wrong happen to your Android device after did some modification, simply just restore it back from the Nandroid backup you made. Nandroid backup is already save my Android smartphone from bad situations many times i couldn't remember.

How to Enable Root or Superuser Access on Android Devices Running CyanogenMod ROM

Root is the first step when an Android user decide to journey in the Android hacking and tweaking world. By rooting an Android device, we can open the whole system and possibilities become unlimited. One of the most reason why user want to root their Android device is to installing a custom ROM. Now, for you who are using CyanogenMod ROM on your Android device and want a root mode / access, here is the easy steps to unlock the root mode on CyanogenMod ROMs.

How to unlock root mode on Android device running CyanogenMod ROMs

1. To unlock root mode on Android device which running CyanogenMod ROM, we must unlock the "Developer option". Go to "Settings" menu
2. Scroll down and select "About phone"
3. Look for "Build number", then tap rapidly on it for about 7 - 10 times. If you're done it right, there should be appear message "you have enabled developer option".
   
   
   
4. Now back to "Settings" menu, you will see "Developer option" option, choose it.
   
   
   
5. Scroll down slowly to find "Root Access", tap it. Then choose / select "Apps and ADB".
   
   
   
   
   
   
6. Done! From now on if you run an application that asking for superuser permission, it will appear menu where you can grant or deny it's superuser permission request.

What is Stock - Custom - ROM on Android

ROM stands for Read Only Memory. ROM is basically part of device storage where the content is cannot easily to be changed, that's why it's called "Read Only". It need some hacking jobs to change a ROM of Android device. And it is because changing ROM is a hacking jobs, it is also be "illegal" in some way to change the ROM of Android device to the device manufacturer. But it's not illegal like you will be jailed, cause me myself have done it many times (lol :D ), it is just like the device manufacturer will say "Hey i build that phone, you have no permission to modify it" and something "Owh, you modify the system of my phone. Allright, just don't blame me if something happen to your device" :D .

Change the ROM in Android device refers to change or modify the system like the display, system contents, or even upgrade / downgrade the Operating System versions. Only with change the ROM by installing custom ROM is the only way i can feel and use Android 6.0 Marshmallow on my Samsung Galaxy V which originally released as Android 4.4 Kitkat.

Stock ROM on Android

Like it's called "Stock" ROM is the original ROM released with the device from the manufacturer. Example the stock ROM Android device on Samsung is Touchwiz, on Xiaomi is MIUI, on Sony is Sense, etc.

I basically do not like stock ROM especially on my Samsung Galaxy V cause there is so much unnecessary bloatware and it just overload the system and eat storage space and RAM. Example on my Samsung Galaxy V stock ROM, there is Google Plus app (who need Google Plus if there is something called Facebook, oops... :D ) and Line app which i think it's just "brotherhood app" (because both Line and Samsung was born at South Korea :D ).

Advantages of using stock ROM:

• More stable
• Easy to use
• Get support service from device manufacturer

Custom ROM on Android

Custom ROM is a ROM created by third party. Let's just say it is developed outside the legal device manufacturer. Example the most popular custom ROM on Android is CyanogenMod, AOKP, etc. One thing you must remember for custom ROM development on Android, it maybe started by one man, but it involved huge number of people contribute to the development. That's why i think Android community is so cool :D .

Because Android itself is an Open Source project, so everyone can modify, tweak, and release his own creation of Android freely to the public. And for the reason, Android now become the most popular mobile Operating System in the world and beat the other predecessors like Symbian, Blackberry, and even iOS.

The advantages of custom ROM of course it will be more suitable to the user needs. Because custom ROM is developed by a group of people, where they get suggestions and requests directly from the Android users of how and like what the ROM should be developed.

Advantages of using custom ROM:

• Display and UI is more attractive
• The features is more suitable to the user
• Many choices from different developers
• Performance increasement
• Can upgrade the Android version

Although it's more interesting to change your Android device ROM into a custom ROM, remember that installing a custom ROM will make your warranty of your device void. Installing and using a custom ROM is also need some knowledge to do it. Read, learn, and gather informations before you decide to install a custom ROM on your Android device because if you make a mistake, your device could be not booting anymore or even it will become totally dead.

Fix External SD Card on Android 6.0 Marshmallow to Become Full Writable Without Format It as Internal

Android 6.0 Marshmallow is already released and now even already released Android N (Nougat). But there is one major change in the storage access starting from Android 6.0.

The external storage card (SD Card) is not fully writable just like the previous Android version and it also loss of ability to move application and game to the external SD Card but with one condition, we must format the external SD Card and then it will become the part of the device internal storage.

Formatting external SD Card as internal also means that the formatted external SD Card will only work and usable ONLY on that device.

Oh and one more thing, the external SD Card naming is also changes different from previous Android version from /storage/extSdCard/ to /storage/XXXX-XXXX/, where XXXX-XXXX is some combination of numbers and letters.

Actually the full write access on external SD Card on Android 6.0 and up is still exist, only to application which got permission to do it. In order to get permission to write on external SD Card, the application must open the "Document storage" and then select the root of external SD Card.

But for the application that not implemented the method (or the app developer is just too lazy to implement it, hehe :D ), the write access to external SD Card is dead (except on directory /storage/XXXX-XXXX/Android/data/domain.application.package.name/.

But for you who don't wan't to format the external SD Card as internal on your Android device, but still want full write and read access, there is one solution using Xposed module called "XinternalSD".

XinternalSD has been tested on my Android smartphone running Android 6.0 Marshmallow, CyanogenMod 13 (CM13) ROM and it could solve the following issues on the following applications i have tested:

• UC Browser, now i can set the download directory to /storage/XXXX-XXXX/ANYWHEREIWANT/.
• Helium, now the delete and make backup to external SD Card (/storage/XXXX-XXXX/carbon/) is working properly.
• Titanium Backup, now i can set the backup folder to /storage/XXXX-XXXX/ANYWHEREIWANT/.
• And other applications...

Requirements:

• Backup (if you feel need it).
• Rooted
• Xposed Framework Installed. See: Xposed Framework Installer for Android 6.0 Marshmallow / CM13 ROM
• Latest XinternalSD module.

Steps how to make external SD Card become full writable on Android 6.0 Marshmallow without need to format it, using XinternalSd

Note that this only make the external SD Card full writable so every application could write and read freely to external SD Card without need permission, and not retrieve the ability to move application or game to external SD Card.

1. Download and install latest version of XinternalSD.
2. Activate the XinternalSD module on Xposed.
3. Open the XinternalSD app, make sure the option "Custom path to internal SD card" and "Full access to external SD card" is √ checked.
4. Now reboot your Android device and test it yourself...

Xposed Framework Installer for Android 6.0 Marshmallow / CM13 ROM

Allright, now here is the official Xposed Framework Installer for you who use phone with Android 6.0 Marshmallow version. This Xposed for Marshmallow has been tested by me on an unofficial CyanogenMod 13 (CM13 ROM) on Samsung Galaxy V SM-G313HZ, and work like a charm.

As we know, the Xposed for Android Lollipop (SDK21 and SDK22) and Marshmallow (SDK23) is different from Kitkat version. The installation of the Framework must be flashed through recovery mode (TWRP recommended). Untill now, the development of Xposed by the developer Rovo89@XDA is still going on and already come to ALPHA state.

Requirements:
• Rooted
• Custom Recovery installed
• Considering backup

How to install Xposed Framework Installer on Android Marshmallow (tested on CyanogenMod 13 ROM)

1. Power off your Android smartphone, and boot into recovery mode.
2. Just straight install the Xposed Framework.zip file through recovery (download link at the end of post). After done, wipe dalvik cache and reboot your Android smartphone. Caution! This first reboot time might take a very loooooooong time (on my Samsung Galaxy V it need more less 30 minutes to 1 hour for this first reboot.
3. After reboot, just install the Xposed.apk for the Android Lollipop up. And finally your Android Marshmallow smartphone is ready to rock with Xposed and the modules!
4. If your Android phone suffer a soft brick or you want to remove xposed framework, then just boot back to recovery mode and try to flash (install) the Xposed Uninstaller.zip file.

Xposed Framework Installer for Android 5.0 and 5.1 Lollipop / CM12.1 ROM

Back with another post about Xposed :v. What should i say? Xposed is a really great invention on Android platform, i really depend on it, more over to the Xposed Additions module to remap my screenshot button. Yeah, with Exposed Framework Installer and Xposed Additions module, now i can take screenshot in my Android smartphone with only holding the 'volume down' button.

Now i will share Xposed Framework Installer for you who used Android phone with Android version 5.0 and 5.1 version. The xposed for Android Lollipop and Marshmallow still developed by Rovo89@XDA and tungstwenty@XDA. The development actually is just on ALPHA-4 state. But I already used it on my Samsung Galaxy V with CM12.1 ROM and it's good no issue found. But beware this is still ALPHA-4 state, and i only try this on CM12.1 ROM, so different device, different ROM, maybe will bring different result.

* Custom recovery installed. TWRP is recommended
